Dear Juno,

I think you made a right decision by giving your baby to someone who really wanted one. You acted like the very selfless person I believe you are. Obviously you were not ready to become a mom and you probably gave a better life to your child by giving them for adoption. I also think yours was a very brave choice that shows how strong you are.
Anyway, I believe you could have aborted if you wanted to, because only you know what is best for you. There are already too many children in this world who need a home, so I do not believe aborting is something wrong to do if you know you can’t promise a good life to that child.
If I were to get pregnant now I do not know for sure what I would do. I am not ready to be a mom and I would probably not be able to give my child to adoption because I would get too attached to them. I don’t think I could be as strong as you so I would probably end up aborting or keeping the baby with me.
When and if I will have a family, I really hope I’ll be able to adopt. I believe we all should focus more on the children that are now on this Earth and struggle everyday because they don’t have a family, and do something to help them.
Abortion has always been a very controversial issue. People that claim to be pro-life think that all human life is sacred, that life begins at conception, and so abortion is always wrong (and some religious people also believe that contraception is wrong, which leads to even more unwanted pregnancies).
I honestly believe that the idea of “sacredness” is unhelpful if one has to choose between risking the life of the mother or the life of the unborn foetus.
People often argue that it is not for doctors “to play God” and that it is for God to decide matters of life and death. But it could be said that all medical interventions are “playing God” (even your childhood vaccinations may have kept you alive longer than “God” planned) so I think we have to decide for ourselves how we use medical powers.
I also believe laws should not be based on claims which rely on religious faith.
On the other hand, I can understand the point of view of the people who are pro life. It’s hard to tell when a foetus actually becomes a human being with human rights and nobody would like to have to make this decision for the foetus.
On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision in the case of Roe v. Wade, which recognized that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions, including the decision to have an abortion without interference from politicians. In 1965, illegal abortions made up one-sixth of all pregnancy ,and childbirth ,related deaths. But now that abortion is legal, it has become one of the safest medical procedures in the United States, with a safety record of over 99 percent. Moreover, because it is legal, women who decide to have an abortion can receive support throughout the process from medical professionals. This is why I believe abortion should not only remain legal in the US but be legalized everywhere in the world. A lot of women died because they didn’t have any other choice but giving birth or aborting without the help of a doctor. I think abortion should be considered and treated as a fundamental right because everyone should have the right to choose for their own body.
